Purpose

This study describes an FoU (research and training) project, carried out at the private daycare centre called Borgen, in the town of Moelev. The aim of the project was to develop personnel cooperation at the institution with primary focus on making personnel aware of their own role and communication patterns in the personnel group through individual and group guidance. Guidance centred on the specific issues facing personnel in their work situation and it was based on concepts from system theory, which were reviewed and discussed.

Result

The study concluded that the personnel had good communication skills, that they had a realistic picture of themselves, and that during the study they became more aware of their own skills. The personnel found that their individual communication skills improved after receiving guidance and that the quality of the communication process was enhanced. The guidance provided them with theoretical knowledge which influenced their professional work and reflections as well as overall cooperation within the personnel group. They became more aware of their need for each other and the fact that they can help each other. They noted that they were able to realise visions and decisions. However, the rather direct tone of communication used by the personnel could be perceived as somewhat harsh until the ‘codes’ of the institution were understood.

Design

The sample was composed of the pedagogical personnel at a daycare centre. There was a total of 11 in the sample, seven assistants and four qualified child carers. These people were followed over nine months through visits to the institution with individual and group guidance, formal and informal interviews, as well as questionnaire surveys.
