Purpose
The objective of this study is to examine children’s encounters with literature at kindergarten and to understand the role of literature and picture books in the kindergarten. The study concerns how external and internal conditions influence how kindergartens use books. External conditions are defined in the study as statutory requirements, financial budgets and the use of libraries. Internal conditions are defined as the attitudes, experience and motivation of child carers. The study analyses the reading environment at kindergartens, literature-pedagogical work and the role of libraries in the use of literature by kindergartens.
Result
The conclusion is that child carers want to read for children and use books in their pedagogical work, but this is frustrated by lack of time and planning. Neither library staff nor carers utilise library visits for other than borrowing and returning books. Children themselves decide which books they want to borrow.
Design
The study is based on two observations, field notes and eight interviews (of which five are interviews with children) at a municipal kindergarten.
