Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of competence upgrades to equip child carers to analyse, understand and deal with pedagogical challenges in their work. The study describes the effect of an intervention, in which the LP model (model for learning environment and pedagogical analysis) has been implemented as a pedagogical tool at daycare centres.
Result
The study shows that the combination of continuing and further education and training and development projects contributes to developing the qualifications of the employees to apply an analysis and problem solution model like the LP model at pedagogical institutions. Through the project, participants acquired a mental model applicable in their daily work, and this model contributes to strengthening communication about difficult situations. The study results are presented in the four categories resulting from the process the participants have been through. The four categories are 1) articulated practice, 2) informed practice, 3) analytical practice and 4) coordinated practice.
Design
Data was collected from 12 municipalities through focus-group interviews. A total of 55 municipal consultants and managers from 43 daycare centres were interviewed. At the time they were interviewed, participants were in the process of acquiring the methodology of the LP model through an e-learning course and pedagogical events. The theoretical framework in the study is cultural sociological theory, and the material was analysed and encoded on the basis of grounded theory, in which topics in the material were identified and collected.
