Purpose
This study aims to describe and discuss various thoughts and ideas on equality (“jämställdhet”) in the Swedish preschools and primary schools in the light of control documents and perceptions of
social pedagogues.
Result
The control documents leave much room for the individual preschool teachers and school teachers
to make their own interpretation of equality. Furthermore, the perceptions of preschool teachers and
school teachers can be divided into two groups: One group, where equality is regarded as
‘homogeneity’, and another group, where equality is regarded as balancing differences. However,
there is a clear consensus among all teachers in the study that equality primarily means gender equality. Next, most of them support the view that equality stands for joint parental responsibility
and erasing power differences.
Design
The study consists of two parts. A document study of the Education Act, curricula and course plans
in Sweden as well as a quantitative cross-sectional study of the views of preschool teachers and
school teachers.
Curricula, course plans and the Education Act were collected and analysed, while a questionnaire with statements about the meaning of equality was answered by a randomised selection of preschool
teachers and school teachers.
