Purpose
This dissertation examines children's digital stories and cultural meaning-making as a bridge between pedagogical practices and the media culture. The study examines how the media culture and pedagogical practices are reflected in the interaction between children and child and youth educators when they meet to create stories using digital technology. What do children communicate via their multimedia productions, and what is the link between this communication and the various pedagogical practices?
Result
The dissertation shows how children can integrate their experience from the media culture with institutional practice and how they can enhance their activities as cultural producers. Furthermore, the dissertation shows how children and child and youth educators bridge the pedagogical institution and media culture through interactive processes and picture stories. In addition, it shows how child and youth educators can change position when the pedagogical situation changes as a result of the development of new technologies.
Design
The dissertation is an ethnographic, qualitative study. The study is based on sociocultural theory. The study is based on observations and video footage of 34 children aged two to ten years from 17 different centres (kindergartens and after-school centres) over a two-year period. In addition, child and youth educators have been interviewed.
