Purpose
The aim is to show how the child perspective can open up for questioning the concept of institutionalisation. The focus of the study includes how the term ‘institutionalisation' is defined in relation to early childhood education and care.
Result
The study shows that in order to determine whether a child is institutionalised or not, one must examine what the child actually does at the centre; primarily through ethnographic studies. Focusing on the child's perspective forces one to ask how children do in daycare. Understanding childhood as institutionalised ignores the child as a stakeholder and creator of early childhood education and care.
Design
The study is of a research synthesis nature.
