Purpose
The purpose of the study is to describe and analyse the significance of the Reggio Emilia pedagogical philosophy in Swedish schools and daycare centres. This is done by examining children's aesthetic learning processes in kindergarten and school, and elucidating the connection between the children's artistic production processes and their overall learning processes.
Result
The study points out that the creative activities included in the Reggio Emilia pedagogical practices could support cognitive, emotional and social learning in children. The author states that the Reggio Emilia emphasis on aesthetic learning processes fits in well with the Scandinavian school, and that this type of teaching could also support the democratic learning process.
Design
The study is an ethnographic study. The study describes the work at nine Italian daycare centres, three Swedish daycare centres, two Swedish municipal primary and lower secondary schools and a Finnish municipal primary and lower secondary school.
