Purpose
This study examines language development and children's literature in kindergarten. The aim is to clarify the unofficial literary canon for children aged one to six years at daycare centres.
Result
There was one book at daycare centres that was less than five years old (i.e. published later than 2002). The approach to pedagogical practices and aesthetic learning processes expressed by child carers is in conflict with the actual ‘picture book-practice’ in the kindergartens examined.
Design
The study is a document-based ethnographic study. Observations and focus group interviews were conducted at eight daycare centres.
