Purpose
This study examines how participatory student learning (focusing on nutrition in the kindergarten) can contribute to the development of early childhood education and care.
Result
75% of the staff at the two kindergartens say that their competence regarding nutrition and meals in kindergarten has increased. 95% of the staff and 75% of the parents state that they have changed their attitudes on child nutrition in kindergartens. 45% of the parents feel that their nutritional awareness has increased, and 50% feel that their children are showing increasing interest in fruit and vegetables. 12% of the parents indicate that they have changed their eating habits. The project shows that better nutrition can be implemented in all kindergartens in the municipality in question. Another conclusion of the project is that project-based and self-governing learning processes are suitable as part of continuing and further education and training of child and youth educators.
Design
This is an action research study based on method generation in a ‘what works' perspective. Under the supervision of teachers, five students at the teacher training programme conduct a development project involving children, staff and parents at two kindergartens
