Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine learning environments at daycare facilities working with the LP model. The study focusses on gender and on whether or not the child is already receiving special support. The LP model is about building good development and learning environments focussing on the well-being of children and on their personal, social and linguistic development.

Result

Based on the topics of the questionnaire survey, the results of the study are presented on the basis of three variables: 1) language and social skills, 2) relationship to adults and 3) well-being. All variables are presented on the basis of the background variables of gender and of whether or not the child is receiving special support.

The study was conducted at daycare facilities working with the LP model and it shows a significant correlation between language and social skills. Furthermore, it shows that boys score lower than the average among study participants, whereas girls are above average in terms of social and language skills. The study also shows that the social and language skills of the children depend on whether or not they are receiving support. Children who are receiving support score higher than those who are not receiving support. The children's assessment of their relationship with adults and their own well-being shows that boys assess their relationship with adults to be poorer than girls, but both genders have an overall high score. Also here there is a difference depending on whether or not children are receiving support, but both groups are generally doing well.

Altogether the differences between girls and boys and between children who are receiving support and children who are not indicate that some children are not given the optimal development opportunities.

Design

The data basis for this study is composed of perspectives and assessments from both children and early childhood educators. The study includes a total of 44 daycare facilities, all of which have worked with the LP model in the period 2010-2012. A total of 1371 children and 1389 early childhood educators from the 44 daycare facilities took part in a questionnaire survey. The study analyses the correlations, which were investigated quantitatively, and the results of the study are continuously being related to other studies which support or elaborate these results.
