Purpose
The thesis explores how children aged 3 to 5 years experience and interact with digital film technology in a Swedish kindergarten with a digital profile. The study investigates how children’s interaction with digital technology can facilitate new ways of seeing, thinking about and understanding the environment, seen through Deleuze’s film philosophy. The research questions are:
- How does digital film technology affect the children’s and the researcher’s way of seeing and thinking about images in kindergarten?
- How can Deleuze’s film theory help us understand children’s image and film work when children and adults film and discuss the films together?
Result
The results show that digital film technology gives children a new way to explore and understand their world through images and film. The children used film to express both concrete and abstract ideas, including mirror images of reality and memories, enabling them to experiment with different images of reality. The study highlights how the children’s creative film work led to new insights into their visual thinking and imagination, and how this process created a deeper link between children and digital tools in kindergarten.
Design
The method in the study is based on digital ethnography, where the researcher observed and actively participated in the children’s film projects over a period of twelve months. The study collected data through video recordings and field notes that documented how the children filmed each other and discussed the films. The children’s and the researcher’s interaction with digital film technology was analysed using Deleuze’s theoretical film perspectives to understand the children’s image and film experiences.
