Purpose
The study investigates how Danish kindergarten teachers experience psychological safety in the workplace. The study aims to fill a research gap, as there has been limited research on psychological safety in a kindergarten context. The research questions are:
- How do kindergarten teachers experience psychological safety in the workplace?
- What influence do leaders and colleagues respectively have on whether they experience psychological safety or not?
Result
The study shows that over a third of kindergarten teachers who answered the survey do not experience psychological safety in their workplace. Both the quantitative and qualitative data highlight that management is the factor that has the greatest impact on teachers’ experience of psychological safety. Colleagues also have some influence, but to a lesser extent than management.
Design
The study sample consists of 305 kindergarten teachers who answered a survey. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with three teachers aged 25-55 years with 2 to 22 years of experience. The study uses a sequential mixed-methods design. This involves a combination of quantitative data from the survey and qualitative data from in-depth interviews.
