Purpose

The study investigates how the use of digital technology, especially action cameras, affects children’s stories and movement in kindergarten. The purpose is to explore new ways of approaching children’s perspectives through mobile digital documentation, and particularly how they can be used to combine physical movement and digital technology in teaching. The research questions are:

  1. What characterises children’s movement and mobility in a group influenced by mobile digital documentation techniques?
  2. What is expressed in children’s stories that are created in connection with the use of mobile digital documentation techniques?
  3. What descriptions of kindergarten children as fellow citizens become possible based on the content and creation of mobile digital stories?

Result

The results show that the children become more active producers of knowledge through the use of action cameras in teaching. The children’s stories, captured in motion, combined physical actions and digital expressions. This created new forms of learning and participation, where children not only observed but also actively contributed to documenting their experiences. The cameras enabled the children to explore both their surroundings and their roles as fellow citizens, which contributed to a more dynamic educational content in kindergarten. In addition, the study highlights that children’s stories can create a democratic platform in educational practice.

Design

The study used a visual, digital ethnographic method in which 19 children aged 4-6 years (12 girls and 7 boys) from a kindergarten participated. The researchers collected data on the children and a kindergarten teacher through filming with action cameras (GoPro). The children filmed the route between the kindergarten and their homes, as well as each other’s homes Afterwards, the children edited the collected material and added symbols, text, sound effects and voices to create digital productions. The researchers observed the film sequences to analyse data production, behaviour, bodies and speech.
