Purpose
The study investigates the interaction between bodily/physical and verbal communication, as well as how nature plays an active role in the dialogue between a kindergarten teacher student and a child. The research question is: How can we characterise a dialogue involving a lot of physical interaction and very few verbal exchanges?
Result
The study finds that the dialogue between the child and the student kindergarten teacher is rich in physical interaction. There is less verbal communication, and the child makes only three verbal utterances. At the same time, the results show that natural materials and the puddle play a key role in the dialogue. The participants interact with the puddle, and it serves as a foundational initiative for the dialogue that unfolds. The study introduces the term ‘diatopos’ as an expression of the encompassing role nature plays in the dialogue.
Design
The study explores an interaction between a student kindergarten teacher and an 18-month-old child. The data consist of video recording and transcription of the two participants’ dialogue next to a puddle. Both physical actions and verbal responses between the student kindergarten teacher and the child are systematically analysed. In addition, the interaction with the puddle is investigated.
