Purpose

The study investigates the implementation and maintenance of the Motor Skills in Preschool (MiPS) intervention programme. MiPS aims to optimise children’s motor skills through weekly physical activity sessions. The aim of this study is to use the RE-AIM framework to assess the two-year implementation process of MiPS since the programme was implemented.

Result

The results show that kindergarten staff believe the MiPS programme promotes motor skills in children. Core elements from the programme are seen as suitable for everyday practice, and the kindergarten teachers used these during physical activity sessions as support in their work and to achieve educational goals. The biggest barrier was finding time to plan these sessions. There was also great variation in the degree of implementation among the kindergartens.

Design

The data collection was carried out using questionnaires that were distributed to kindergarten staff at seven kindergartens in a Danish municipality. The data were collected three months, one year and two years after the start of the programme. The questionnaires focused on the kindergarten staff’s perceptions of the programme’s impact on children’s motor skills, as well as assessment of implementation fidelity and support elements.
