Purpose
The study investigates the concept of creativity in creative processes involving digital technology in kindergarten, in accordance with the Framework Plan for Kindergarten’s focus on the creative use of digital technology. The research question is: What characterises a creative technology-mediated collaborative process in which a group of kindergarten children (4-5 year olds) and a kindergarten teacher create a digital picture book together?
Result
The analysis shows that the creative, technology-mediated collaborative process is characterised by the children and the kindergarten teacher exploring new opportunities together in various ways. Creativity is distributed between participants, activities and artefacts, and the process can be characterised as an example of a creative, technology-mediated collaborative process. By starting with their own thoughts and ideas, the children and the kindergarten teacher together create a new cultural resource through the work with the picture book; they create a product that is new, original and meaningful to them. The analysis also shows that in order to understand the entirety of children’s creative collaborative processes, it is important to include both the process and the product.
Design
The empirical material consists of video observations of all the activities carried out in connection with a creative process in a kindergarten. A total of 8 hours of video recording was collected over a period of 9 days, during which a group of children made a picture book together with the kindergarten teacher. The group consisted of four girls and two boys aged five. In the analysis, the article author focuses on the two children who participated throughout the project period.
