Purpose
The study focuses on open kindergartens in Norway and investigates users’ experiences and satisfaction with the service. The purpose is to see how satisfied users are, what factors predict overall satisfaction, and gain more insight into the quality of the service. In addition, the study will investigate the potential benefits that open kindergartens may have for children and their caregivers.
Result
The study shows that the users were very satisfied with the open kindergartens and experienced them as beneficial for both themselves and the children. The analyses show that the physical environment, staff, and benefits for children and caregivers were significant factors in overall satisfaction with open kindergartens. Open kindergartens also served as important meeting places. The researchers behind the study believe the service can complement other existing municipal services by being preventive and health-promoting for the children and their families.
Design
The study is based on user surveys collected from eleven municipalities in Norway that offer open kindergartens. A total of 292 respondents answered the survey that was conducted over a period of six to eight weeks between 2015 and 2018. The survey was given to all adult users who visited an open kindergarten during the survey period. The user survey contained 53 questions about children’s well-being, the physical environment, accessibility, staff, the information users received, user participation, as well as any benefits that open kindergartens may have for children and their caregivers. The researchers performed statistical analyses of the data material.
