Purpose
The study investigates what kindergarten teachers consider to be the subjects most suitable for teaching in Norwegian kindergartens. The research question is: What do kindergarten teachers see as the most valuable topics for children to learn about during their time in kindergarten?
Result
The results show that all responses emphasised a common theme, namely that the focus should be placed on the learning and development of social skills, as well as early reading and writing skills (ELL). The National Early Literacy Panel (NELP) defines ELL as learning vocabulary and developing oral language, along with becoming familiar with the alphabet, writing letters and achieving phonological awareness.
Design
Structured interviews were conducted with 23 kindergarten teachers from a total of six Norwegian kindergartens. The interviews lasted approximately 35 minutes each. The responses from the interviews were subject to a qualitative analysis.
